Notes from Parents Forum 15th April 2026
Thank you to the parents who attended our Parents’ Forum this term to discuss the use of electronic devices and mobile phones in school. We really value these opportunities to work together and it was great to have such a positive and constructive discussion. We are very grateful for the support and understanding shown by those who attended.
At our school, we do not allow children to use mobile phones or personal electronic devices during the school day. Following updated Government guidance received in February 2026, we are now formalising our procedures into a clear policy, which will be shared on our website shortly.
We discussed how some children may need to bring a mobile phone to school, for example if they are walking home alone or travelling between homes. Parents at the forum were supportive of the approach that phones are only in school based on genuine need and should be handed in to the school office on arrival, where they are stored safely throughout the day.
As part of our safeguarding procedures, we also confirmed that children should not wear smart watches or similar devices in school, due to the potential for access to unfiltered internet or messaging features.
We also discussed the importance of ensuring mobile phones are not used on the school site by parents, carers or visitors, including the playground, to help prevent any inappropriate photography or filming. Parents at the forum were understanding of this and supportive of our safeguarding priorities.
As we do not have permission for all children to be photographed or filmed at school events, we continue to operate a no photography or filming policy. However, recognising that this can be disappointing for parents, one good idea that came from the forum was to have a designated photo booth area where parents could take their own child for a photograph on special events such as sports day.
We will aim to trial a photo booth later in the term to see if this is feasible as we would love to give parents the opportunity to have a photographic memory of a special day whilst still fulfilling our legal and safeguarding responsibilities. Watch this space!
If you do have any queries or concerns in regard to any of the issues discussed, please do get in touch. Thank you once again for your continued support in helping us keep our school a safe and respectful environment for all children. This is really appreciated by all members of our team.
